Two-post lifts are the most popular vehicle hoists used by professional automotive shops and DIY mechanics because they provide excellent under-car access while occupying minimal garage floor space. They generally range in capacity from 9,000 to 18,000 pounds, making them highly versatile for everything from compact passenger vehicles to heavy-duty diesel trucks.

When choosing a two-post lift, there are two primary design configurations to consider:

Clear Floor (Overhead) vs. Floor Plate (Base Plate)

Clear Floor (Overhead): These models feature an equalization cable and hydraulic lines running across a top bar. They leave the garage floor completely unobstructed, allowing you to easily roll toolboxes, oil drains, and jacks underneath the vehicle. However, they require tall ceilings - usually at least 11.5 to 12.5 feet.

Floor Plate (Base Plate): These models run cables and hoses along the floor under a metal hump or plate. They are perfect for low-ceiling garages but create a small barrier that can obstruct rolling jacks and equipment.

Symmetric vs. Asymmetric Configuration

Symmetric Lifts: Columns face each other directly, and the support arms are of equal length. They distribute vehicle weight evenly (50/50 split) and are ideal for heavier trucks, vans, and SUVs.

Asymmetric Lifts: Columns are rotated at a 30-degree angle, and the front arms are shorter than the rear arms. This shifts the vehicle's center of balance rearward (60/40 split), allowing you to open the vehicle doors wider for easy cabin access while loaded on the hoist.
