Hey folks – Here we go again. We’ve got some really cool new pictures for you to take a gander at. If you like classic cars, then these pictures are for you. We’re partial to the old Ford pickup ourselves. These pictures were submitted by a customer by the name of Stan Misraji out of Burbank, CA. He ordered a Bend Pak HD9STX four post lift. This model is a 9,000 lb. capacity auto lift that features an extra 1 foot of lifting height, along with an extra 2 feet of runway length. These dimensions can be important when you want to park a taller vehicle underneath, as show in the image with the Ford truck underneath. It can also be important for you if you need to park a longer vehicle up top. He won a Clore Automotive JNC4000 Jump N Carry jump starter just for simply submitting these pictures to us. Not a bad deal for him. And not a bad deal for you. We will have another drawing next month. We choose a winner randomly from among the many customers who submit images of their recently purchased car lifts. That’s all you have to do. Purchase a lift, send us a picture or two, along with your order number, and then wait to see if you win.
Here’s what Stan Misraji said –
“You were very helpful and made the experience easy. I was greatly impressed with the lift, delivery time as well as the installation. Your installers were extremely professional and accomplished the installation in a fast time frame. Thank you again.”
In case you’re new to this blog, we have been having a drawing each month recently that awards a free hand-held jump starter to a lucky customer who submits a picture or two of their new car lift, tire changer or air compressor to us. The rules are pretty simple; just submit a picture, and you are entered. Then, we have a random drawing that chooses the winner.
Our favorite pictures are those that show our customer’s home garages with their brand new auto lift along with their favorite vehicle perched up on top. Very cool stuff. There are lots of nice garages and “man-caves” out there.
This month’s winner of our monthly drawing is Walt Reid from Branson, MO. Here is what he said –
“The BendPak Lift is working great! I have been working on my friends’ 1961 Austin Healey “Bugeye” Sprite vintage racer. The car is so narrow, the arms were almost too short! But it fit. I will send you a photo of my 66 Jaguar E-type when I get that up in the air. Today I put a friends 7,000 lb Dodge Ram 2500 dual cab on the lift to help him change shocks. No problem! It didn’t even sound like it was straining. I was at a buddys shop last week; his (Other brand) lift looked like a wimp compared to the BendPak. The cylinders on the the outside of the columns; the arms looked thinner and smaller; he has to pull a release cable
on each side to unlock the latch, etc. Thanks for helping with a great decision.”
We often receive calls from customers who need to raise their car to perform service on it and they will sometimes interchange the terms Car Lift and Car Jack. They mistakenly believe the two term mean the same thing. They do not mean the same thing.
A car lift raises the entire vehicle off the ground, meaning all four tires or wheels will be propped up off the ground. Car jacks raise the automobile one wheel at a time, or one axle at a time. If all four wheels are off the ground at the same time, there are greater service capabilities. Servicing the auto will also be much quicker as well on an auto lift. Jacks are more cumbersome to work with, and you won’t be able to raise the car as high as you would with a lift. Generally, the maximum lifting height for most floor jacks is in the range of 19 to 24 inches.
You will need to get on your back while working on a vehicle while using a floor jack. Using a creeper will make it easier, but not nearly as easy as when working on a car that is placed on a full rise auto lift. Some lifts only raise the vehicle 26 or 48 inches. These would primarily be used for wheel and brake work, and body work. Full rise lifts, like a two post lift, raise the car to a comfortable working height so that you can actually stand under it.
Reminder – You would always need to use jack stands when using a floor jack. Using a floor jack without a set of jack stands is taking a big risk for no reason. The amount of time it takes to set up a pair of jack stands is nothing compared with the potential hazard if not used.
It was only a few years ago that you would expect to change your plugs every 30,000 miles or so. Recent advancements in spark plug technology now allows drivers to get up to 100,000 miles out of their plugs. The introduction of platinum and other precious materials to spark plugs has boosted the life expectancy to create the modern “Long Life” spark plug that is becoming prominent today. Most new vehicles come with extended life spark plugs today. These plugs also improve engine performance along with fuel consumption.
Of course, these premium plugs come at a higher price, but are worth it because of they last so much longer. This is a plus because it can get expensive changing out spark plugs with the modern engine compartment getting so cramped. When plugs are so difficult to gain access to, the increased time it takes to replace them means increased labor costs for recession weary consumers.
When technicians are counseling customers on which plugs to get while their car is on the Auto Lift, they should bring to the driver’s attention the longevity benefits of these long life spark plugs, along with the increased performance and fuel economy benefits. At the same time, when changing out the plugs, it is the technician’s responsibility to inspect the old plugs for irregular wear, carbon or oil build up or any other potential problems so that he can diagnose to help prevent future problems. These conditions could mean there is another problem that may have gone undiagnosed up until now, and could help save the customer money preventing a future problem.
If you can provide this level of service to your customers, you are sure to retain them as a loyal patrons.
We’ve all encountered it. You are trying to remove a frozen nut from a wheel or some other component, and it just won’t budge. There’s just too much corrosion due to years of build up and oxidation. Or maybe the nut is stripped. These situations call for more than just brute force. You risk damaging some component of the piece that you are working on, or worse yet, your knuckles.
One of the first tactics technicians will turn to is putting a torch to it to see if that frees it up. Heat will cause metals to expand, thereby allowing you to free it up. However, heat can result in problems in many applications. You can damage adjacent plastic or rubber components with the extreme heat, and some metals may even warp under the heat. Plus, common sense should dictate that you shouldn’t use a torch near any flammable components, or near any systems that utilize hydrocarbon liquids. In these cases, a viable alternative is to introduce cold to the fastener. It can have the same effect as heat in these situations. It will cause the fastener to contract, and any movement , whether expansion or contraction, will potentially free up those stubborn fasteners.
If it’s just a case of the nut being stripped, there are many tools on the market that will allow you to get a “bite” on the fastener. They are too numerous to name here, but they can be very effective in those situations where your wrench just can’t get a good grip on a worn out old nut.
When its just a case of plain old corrosion, a good penetrating oil or lubricant works extremely well. But sometimes you need to give these lubricants some time to work it’s way into the corrosion. And we all know time is money. Sometimes we need the fastener free now, not later. There are many different types of lubricants, and all have their place for certain applications. Some lubricants are not compatible with certain materials. Some may not be compatible with plastics for instance. Others may not be compatible with other oils or greases that may be nearby. Once again, some lubricants are flammable, and should not be used near a heat source.
As you can see, there are a myriad of concerns to consider when you have a car up on the Auto Lift and you are trying to tackle a stuck fastener. The method you choose should be considered carefully before jumping in head first.
It’s getting to be that time of year again. Once that thermometer starts reaching summertime temperatures in the spring, you can count on shop owners looking for a way to cool down their employees. There’s a good reason for this. A comfortable employee is a more productive employee.
When it gets hot this summer, give your employees some relief. Get a shop cooling fan. Not just any shop cooling fan. Get an Evaporative Cooling Fan. What’s the difference? Evaporative Cooling Fans don’t just move the air around. They actually lower the temperature of the air. How? By having the air blow across a pad that wicks up cool water, the air actually cools down as it passes over it. It’s a process that is a proven science. It works! The air coming out of the fans can be up to 28 degrees cooler, depending on various conditions like humidity. And it does so at asignificantly lower cost than air conditioning. When your technician is working under the Auto Lift, you want him comfortable and productive.
So once we’ve established that a shop cooling fan is a wise idea, then it comes down to what machine to get. CoolSpace is one of the most reputable manufacturers in the industry. They’ve been around for decades and they have a wide range of sizes to choose from for different size automotive shops. And of course, you don’t have to use them in an auto shop. We’ve sold these types of machines to all kinds of customers for all different types of applications. You may have seen these on the sidelines at various sporting events to keep the athletes cool. They can be used at almost any type of event, including swap meets, trade shows, farms, etc…
Take our advice. Don’t wait until it’s so hot that you need to get one. By then, you’ll be too late. Now is the perfect time. That’s why we’ve got them on sale at the lowest prices of the season. Give us a call today.
Have you been considering purchasing a four post lift for your home garage? If so, we recommend the model HD-9 or HD9ST BendPak Lift. There is no finer quality four post lift on the market built for the home hobbyist. Whether you’re using it for storing one vehicle over another, or you just want to service your fleet of cars, this lift is the best choice on the market.
Check out what Bruce Dale from Lexington Park, MD had to say about his HD-9ST car lift he just purchased recently. –
“Take a look at the HD-9ST Four Post Lift pictures. There is a 1957 Porsche Speedster underneath the cover. Now this gives me a three car garage and allows me to do routine maintenance so much more easily thanks to this handy auto lift. You guys were great.”
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has come out with a new vehicle scoring system for crash safety. This new system is designed to help consumers have access to information that will aid them in choosing safer vehicles. It tests for front and side impact crashes, as well as resistance to rollover. The testing is much more demanding than the old system. The rating system scores from 1 through five stars, with five being the best score. Among the highest rated cars are the GM Acadia, Hyundai Sonata, Chevy Traverse, BMW 5, and Honda Accord. Most cars scored four. That’s pretty good, and indicates that the modern automobile is safer than ever before. Overall, regulators expect scores to generally be lower due to the more rigorous testing. Auto manufacturers will certainly use this data in their advertising to promote their models with the safest records.
If your car is in an accident, and you happen to find it up on an Auto Lift, it will be of some consolation to know that at least you were safe from harm, protected by the latest technology there is to offer.
If you enjoy attending car shows, swap meets, auctions and any other type of auto enthusiast events, then this post is for you. Every month we display some of the more notable shows and events coming up in various parts of the country. If you like to refurbish classic cars by placing them up on your Auto Lift, or just enjoy viewing these fine pieces of machinery up close, and speaking with other like-minded people.
