Car Buyer Trends That Will Increase Your Profits

April 18th, 2011

The jokes about people deciding on which car to purchase based on how many cup holders it has aren’t that far off after all.
According to a recent study, these accessories factor in to the consumer’s decision making process more than you would realize. Recent research from Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) shows that options offered account for increasing sales at auto dealerships.
Some of the more popular accessories that are influencing consumers were sunroofs, high end sound systems (Now you know why the guy in front of you can’t hear you when you’re honking your horn) and Navigation systems (we need to know where we’re going).  Probably the  most popular is specialty tires and wheels. The craze is sweeping the nation. You’ve seen them out there. They seem to be everywhere. The huge, aggressive flashy rims with the skinny low profile tires are most popular in many urban areas. In many cases, the rims and tires you see on the streets are more expensive than the car itself! It’s all about making a statement we guess.
These accessories can help the auto shop owner increase his profits. All these specialty tires require a new fancy high performance Tire Changer and wheel balancer.
These trends are custom made for shop owners to raise revenues in an increasingly difficult business atmosphere. Garage owners who don’t take advantage of these situations when they arise are destined to fall behind the competition.

Auto Shop Equipment Essentials Wish List – Part 2

March 28th, 2011

Part 2

This post continues the theme of auto shop essentials. Part 1 went over the many different types of car lifts available on the market today. Here are some more pieces of garage equipment that are vital to any auto shop –

Tire Changers and Wheel Balancers –
If you want to be able to change tires, you’re going to need these pieces. There’s lots of money to be made in changing tires. Especially with the growing popularity of the low profile and high performance tires. Many auto shops don’t have the capability of handling these kinds of wheels, and that means more profits for those shops that do. And these are customers who are willing to spend their money. The main concern with a tire changer is you want to get a machine that will not damage the expensive alloy wheels. If you want to handle expensive low profile wheels and high performance tires, you need a mounting helper arm, or you’ll end up spending that extra money on replacing your customers rims that you damaged.
Get a good reliable Tire Changer with a mounting helper arm for low profile tires and pair it up with an accurate  dependable wheel balancer. Accuracy is paramount when it comes to a wheel balancer. You don’t have to get one with all the bells and whistles, but make sure to get one that is accurate and reliable.

Floor Jacks –
Every shop needs a Floor Jack. There are going to be times when your lift is being utilized for another job, and you need to raise a vehicle to service it. Or you have a disabled vehicle out in the lot and you can’t bring it in to your lift. Or maybe your car lift is being serviced or is down. Tips on obtaining the proper jack would include making sure the jack has sufficient capacity to fit a wide variety of automobiles. A 3 ton capacity jack is usually adequate for most vehicles. If you need to lift a full size pick up, you don’t want a light duty jack made for sports cars. By the same token, if you are servicing sports cars exclusively, you better have a low profile floor jack. One that can reach under a low profile sports car. Make sure your jack is able to raise the vehicle high enough as well. Some customers get a jack that only raises 19 inches and are disappointed to find out that a truck they need to lift must be raised 21 inches in order to get high enough to get the wheels off the ground. Also, make sure it is a commercial quality jack that is rebuild-able. If you can’t get new seals for a leaky hydraulic cylinder, it’s just a throw – away. Unfortunately, more and more jacks these days are throw-aways.

Choosing The Proper Wheel Balancer

February 15th, 2011

It is vitally important that your customers wheels are balanced properly. Improperly balanced wheels can lead to a rough ride, especially at higher speeds, which will cause all kinds of headaches for you and your customer. Fortunately, modern wheel balancing technology has come a long way since the bubble balancers of old, and then the static wheel balancers after that. The modern Wheel Balancer offers precision and accuracy that it’s predecessors never could. They offer such capabilities as dynamic balancing, which measures balance based on more than one plane,  and even “road force” balancing that can simulate the forces as if the wheel were actually riding on the road.
As with any piece of auto shop equipment, the more features and capabilities you get, the more the machine costs. So a shop owner must weigh the benefits vs. the cost. For a high volume tire shop, the extra features could be worth it. Time is money. If your technician is spending time chasing weights or diagnosing a vibration issue, you could wish you had sprung for the more expensive machine. Nobody likes comebacks. As they say, “time is money”. Premium features include automatic calibration, hidden spoke mode and automatic parameter entry, where the user doesn’t have to manually enter the parameters. Some models have printers so that you can point out to them the diagnosis of the machine so they can see it for themselves. Some machines even have a wheel lift, so that your technicians can save their backs.
To increase accuracy on high end vehicles, some folks get a mounting flange kit. This allows you to mount the wheel to the machine utilizing the lug holes, instead of using a centering cone. This offers precision that is unparalleled.
A strong majority of auto shops don’t need all those bells and whistles. Many shops just cannot justify the expense. It would take a lot of balanced wheels to pay for an expensive machine. For them, A good, basic, dynamic wheel balancer is all they need.
We recommend a machine like our DST2420 Ranger Wheel Balancer. It is a reliable, accurate machine that can offer years of great service.

New Next Generation Ranger Tire Changers

December 4th, 2010

Ranger Products, a division of BendPak inc. recently came out with their new, next generation of tire changers. They have always been known for building solid, durable and long lasting tire machines. But they never were a company that rests on their laurels.
A few months back, they introduced their new, next generation of Tire Changers and wheel balancer. Now they didn’t go out and re-invent the wheel. There was no need to. There was nothing wrong with their last generation of tire changers. They just wanted to improve them.
So they took the same chassis and just added some new features and quality. This was a wish list of improvements that they had wanted to do for several years.
Some of those improvements include –

A more powerful 2 hp motor. This is more powerful than many of those over-priced, so called “premium” tire changers out there. Most machines out there have a 1 hp to 1.5 hp motor. You will definitely notice a difference in power.

A sturdier, beefier cabinet. One thing you’ll notice is less flex. It is just more stout and won’t slide around the floor on you either.

Improved jet blast feature. Now you’ll be able to seat the bead of virtually any tire that the machine can handle.

Better quality components. For instance, all the foot pedals are now forged steel instead of cast steel. So go ahead. Pound away at them. Don’t worry about breaking them. Even your toughest, most aggressive employees won’t break them

Improved air lines, valves and hoses. All those air line connections underneath that typically leak with those “economy” brands are more reliable and less likely to cause problems. No shortcuts here.

Better warranty. Typical warranty for those economy brands is one year, parts only. With Ranger, you get one year, parts and labor. So if you do have a warranty issue, Ranger will back it up with on-site service if necessary.

All these things and many more combine to give the best value in the tire machine industry.
