Frequently Asked Questions
Can I actually work underneath a vehicle on a four post lift?
Not directly, since the runways sit beneath the vehicle's wheels rather than its frame. A rolling jack accessory solves this by sliding along the runways to raise a section of the vehicle independently, giving you access for brake work, tire changes, and light suspension service without needing a second lift.
What's the difference between an open front and closed front four post lift?
A closed front has a continuous runway across the front of the lift, which is standard for most storage and service use. An open front removes that piece, creating a walkway technicians can step through instead of around, which matters more in shops with frequent movement between vehicles than in a single-car garage.
Do I need an alignment-specific four post lift, or will a general service model work?
If alignment work is a regular part of your service mix, an alignment-deck model with built-in turnplates and slip plates is worth the upgrade. If you're only storing vehicles or doing occasional light service, a general service four post lift covers that without the added cost.
What's the difference between a hobbyist-grade and commercial-grade four post lift?
Hobbyist models are built primarily for occasional use and vehicle storage, with lighter-duty components and a lower price point. Commercial-grade models use heavier cable or chain drive systems, wider runways, and higher rise heights built to handle multiple lift cycles a day without excess wear. Match the grade to how often you'll actually use the lift rather than defaulting to the higher-capacity option.
Is a four post lift easier to use than a two post lift?
For loading, yes. You drive straight onto the runways rather than positioning arms under specific lift points, which removes the risk of missing a pickup point. What you give up is undercarriage access once the vehicle is raised, so the easier loading process comes with a real trade-off if frequent frame-level repair work is part of your regular routine.
Does my four post lift need to be bolted to the floor?
It depends on the lift's class. Commercial-grade four post lifts require bolting to a concrete floor that meets a specified thickness and hardness. Home and hobby models, typically those rated 9,000 lbs. capacity or less, are designed to be free-standing and don't require anchoring, and some even offer a wheel kit so the lift can be moved around the garage.
