An alignment lift is a highly specialized vehicle service platform engineered with integrated slip plates and turnplates to perform exact wheel geometry adjustments. These lifts must keep a vehicle perfectly level across its runways to ensure accurate measurement of caster, camber, and toe angles.
The market is primarily defined by two major configurations: Four-Post Lifts and Scissor Lifts.
Four-Post vs. Scissor Alignment Lifts
Choosing between the two depends heavily on your available bay space, concrete requirements, and budget constraints.
Four Post Lifts: Demands a larger overall footprint due to corner columns. Demands a larger overall footprint due to corner columns. Heavy-duty (typically 12,000 to 14,000+ lbs). Bolted surface-mount only. Long-wheelbase trucks, dual-rear-wheel pickups, and high-volume commercial bays.
Scissor Lifts: Maximum productivity in a minimum space with a compact footprint. Mid to heavy-duty (6,000 to 16,000 lbs). Can be surface-mounted or completely flush-recessed into the floor. Compact shop layouts, low-clearance sports cars, and multi-use bays.
Essential Equipment Tips
Rolling Bridge Jacks: Standard alignment lifts keep the vehicle resting completely on its tires. If you intend to perform brake or wheel service while a vehicle is on the rack, you must purchase optional air-hydraulic rolling jacks to lift the chassis off the runways.
Air & Electrical Demands: Most heavy-duty commercial alignment units demand a dedicated 220V single-phase electrical circuit with a 30-amp breaker. They also require an external air supply pushing 85 to 120 PSI to actuate the pneumatic safety lock systems.
Concrete Thickness: Scissor and high-capacity 4-post units generally dictate a baseline floor requirement of a minimum 6-inch thick concrete pad rated at 3,000 PSI to safely distribute weight and secure anchors.
